clearing tents and arresting occupy protestors. yesterday mcpherson secure. today police move on to freedom plaza. thank you for joining us at 6:00, i'm will thomas. >> i'm maureen umeh. two occupy d.c. camps, two different environments. >> saturday police arrested 11 people most during the predawn raid at mcpherson square. day two at freedom plaza, a different story. roz platers joins us -- platter joins us live. >> reporter: police came in to muck officer son square on

horseback and they came in in riot gear, made a dozen arrests. there was a lot of resize assistants to it. they began dismantling tents. a different story here tonight. as you can see, quiet. people are inside their tents but police are enforcing the snow sleeping here. they have a security perimeter outside the park here. but, again, no -- the scene is not nearly as much as the chaos of yesterday at mcpherson square tents. here is how it began to go down. i got a call about 10:00 this morning from the protestors saying that park police were coming in and giving them a warning that they indeed would be going to the park in an hour to look for compliance, that they indeed were going to check for tents to see if there was bedding here or cooking materials, anything like that. they came in to do their

sweeps. the protestors told us they were allowed to stay if, indeenot have bedding or cooking material. the stuff that they had in their possessions could fit in a backpack, they were allowed to stay. then they went through and checked all the tents. they did bring a haz-mat team in at one point in time to go over the -- some of the tents considered unsanitary. those tents were dismantled. the protestors tell us here a number of them were allowed to stay. they think this will have an impact on their numbers. meanwhile, earlier this morning, they went back to mcpherson square where they continued to dismantle tents from yesterday. we were told by a spokesman that they found a lot of debris including rats, containers of urine and urine soaked bedding as well. we are told that they will enforce the no sleeping rule. they want people to use the

tents -- use the parks, rather. they want them to come, visitors as well as those exercising their first amendment rights but they will not tolerate the areas being used as sleeping quarters or living quarters. >> you have to understand why different approaches at the two sites? >> reporter: i think it's a fair question. frankly there are two very different camp sites. this one here is populated mostly by older, long-time antiwar activists that have really an organizational structure in place. you can't just roll up and say i'm here, i will hang out. they have rules for folks to follow and they have not allowed as many homeless people to infiltrate. they haven't had the same concerns about sanitation. >> still a lot more, i'm sure, to come from both camps. thank you. a college in chicago is offering a class on the occupy movement. 32 students are enrolled in the

occupy everywhere class at roosevelt university. among the criteria, read the movement's newspaper and attend occupy chicago's general assembly meetings and listen to lectures. the professor studied social movements and says this is a good mechanic to study social uprising. protests erupted in the messy face off between susan g. komen and planned parenthood. one komen announced it would pull funding, pro-life supporters cheered. tonight as lauren demarco reports, komen changed its mind. is it too late? >> reporter: it's been a trusted name, breast cancer research funding for decades. susan g. komen must defend its actions in the past week. nancy pelosi's former spokesperson is now working on

komen's message but he is not commenting on strategy. as i found out, it may take a long time to regain previous donors' trust. >> you can't help what made them waiver. >> reporter: last week's decision by susan g. komen to pullman tear grants from planned parenthood prompted massive backlash. at issue was a congressional investigation into planned parenthood. critics called it political posturing. on friday an about face. komen announced it was reversing the decision. supporters we spoke with say there is no quick fix here. >> until they really make clear that they are not going to bow to the political pressure, i won't walk in the march in june. >> reporter: two days later the criticism is continuing online and reports are spreading on the internet that former bush white house press secretary ari flesher was involved with the foundation strategy on planned parenthood and he may be helping with the fallout.

a twitter account belonging to flesher denies that and says komen did not ask him for help. komen is on damage control. leslie provides insight. >> politics they say is not the offense or the crime that is the problem but the cover-up. this wasn't a cover-up but it was a very clumsy attempt to rationalize a bad decision. >> reporter: francis is not involved with either party but he says he would recommend komen go quick yet briefly, regroup then -- >> focus on the positive. great brand, great organization, fundamental, hugely important mission. that is what they ought to be talking about. >> they lied. they switched the position three times. i don't think they can restore trust until they make clear we bowed to political pressure. it's a bad decision. we are sorry we did it and it won't happen again. >> reporter: pro-life organizations like united

americans for life are frustrated with the flip-flop. they thought they scored a victory. live in the newsroom, lauren demarco, fox 5 news. mitt romney's opponents are leaving nevada. the former house speaker plans to get nascar supporters and blue collar workers. rick santorum plans to gain momentum. he says he feels confident about missouri's primary tuesday. one reason, newt gingrich is not on the ballot there. moving on from nevada and to the first tuesday of march, super tuesday, it features seven primaries and three caucuses. but will all or most of the drama be gone by then? james rosen has a closer look tonight. >> reporter: on super tuesday four years ago, also known as tsunami tuesday, 24 states and

american samoa sent parties to the polls. this year with only the g.o.p. staging a contest, only ten states are making it super. >> the republican national committee changed the rules. in 2008 was a calendar that benefitted the democrats, made barack obama a much stronger candidate and hillary clinton a better candidate by the end of the process as well. we learned -- we learned from that. >> reporter: on this tuesday there will be 437 delegates, roughly 19% of the total. and the candidates trailing mitt romney seem to grasp the significance. >> you have to look ahead to super tuesday, all the states in play and we are looking forward to that. >> i don't know if it will be this week or next week, super tuesday or after super tuesday, eventually i believe that the race will move in our direction. >> reporter: most super tuesday

states with award delegates on a congressional basis. >> you can't win if you are not on the ballot. in states like ohio and tennessee, gingrich and santorum have issues in those states with full slate of delegates. that gives romney an increased vantage. >> reporter: once super tuesday is behind us, 80 odell gates will have been awarded, less than 35% of the total. in politics, manpower, money and momentum dictate the mat plat ticks -- mathematics. the candidates focus on the future. newt gingrich and his camp are dealing with drama. >> a voter from florida is suing the campaign saying they fractured his foot at a polling station. he said the house speaker was at the polling station when he went to vote for ron paul. he said gingrich's campaign team tried to get him to move. when he didn't, they used

force. >> called for more security, more people from the campaign came and they said just block him. everybody step on his tows. they did their best to block my sign and push me out of the way. >> now with his fractured foot, he wants to make it clear to gingrich's camp that they can't push people around. coming up, police step in when shoe fanatics get out of hand. they had to shut it down. >> sounds like a i stepped on the machine, and it showed me the pressure points on

drivers hit a detour today. a large part of 410 was shut down for hours in both directions after an early morning crash between a car and a ride on bus. police say it happened around the rockton avenue intersection. it took pepco much of the day to repair a utility control. no one was hurt. an unusual arrest in frederick. police say nicholas terrell was drunk when they first encountered him ant wanted him not to drive. about 2:30 they saw him get behind the wheel. three officers tried to get him to stop. he called 911 wanting to know

why police were following him. he faces several traffic and drunk driving charges. police have charged a man after he pulled a fake gun on someone at a bar in st. mary's county on the eastern shore. the bar patron called police in the town of california saying the man pointed a gun at him in the parking lot. when police tracked down joshua landis, they saw a pellet gun that looked real on the passenger seat of his car. he is charged with assault. a mall had to be shut down when a crowd got too rowdy waiting for a shoe star to open. the shoppers wanted the nike foam sneaker. they called the washington county sheriff. about 100 people were outside the store. there were no arrests and the patrons were escorted into the store a few at a time when the doors opened. i don't know what she is shoes 0 look like but they better be hot for that kind of disturbance. >> better have been a good sale. >> not what you expect to hear

peter dues see has the official. >> reporter: after being battered following initiation, adjoining sailor went to the on board doctor. the doctor told the captain someone was beat up. eight were discharged from the navy. there was wrestling, choking, punching and horsing around. lieutenant commander david mckinney said the man blacked out after being choked and ended up bruised. when an incident like this happens it has to be taken care of. it goes contrary to the core values. the discharges are cut and dry according to the navy because they have a zero-tolerance policy against hazing. there is low quality video of the incident taken by one of the now discharged sailors that shows two men in blue camouflage vigorously in the locker room. a man is seen in a head lock but is released when he taps off then walks out on his own. the navy vass not aware of this -- was not aware of this video before they finished the

investigation because the sailor kept it to himself. judy chew called for military hearings stating that the highest military officials must make eliminating hazing a top priority and stop pretending there is no problem. none of this will change until the secretary of defense commits eradicate the culture of hazing so ingrained within the troops. since the sailors received general discharges and not dishonorable, they won't lose their g.i. benefits and even though they have the right to appeal, nobody has. >> all right. talk about weather. >> we were saying whatever the snow was, the mix that we experienced, it got out quickly. >> we had a nice afternoon which was great and overall just a trace in many areas in the district to the north of us. about an inch to about 2 and a half inches. >> the slopes could have used a little more.

hagerstown. we have 42 at d.c. 40 baltimore and as we take a look up the mid-atlantic, boston 34. 38 new york city. so, overall temperatures, as i said, close to where they should be overall. tonight we will be cool. but satellite and radar composite is showing the snow. the mix is out of the way altogether and most of the moisture to the south has gone as well. we are left with clouds that will move out because we have a nice ridge of high pressure building in and that will hold it for clear skies tonight and set us up nicely for tomorrow. lots of sunshine tomorrow. we have heading into the low 50s. activity as we head through to the extended period. by the time we hit monday night, a few clouds. by tuesday, a chance of a few snow showers over areas of the potomac highlands then wednesday night another round of a wintry mix as a trough heads toward us. we have to watch the variables. also wednesday we could see mostly rain from the i 35.

that will remain to be seen -- from the i-95. that will remain to be seen. tuesday we expect a little more precipitation. monday night, looking at the mountains here, they could see a bit of a mix and rainfall moving in and then it will be out of the way later in the day. look at the wet weather tuesday moving across areas of southern maryland, st. mary's county down to the south. you have to deal with a bit of rain that will move out quickly as we hof into tuesday -- as we move into tuesday. wednesday is extended chance of wintry mix for hump day. cooler conditions to the north. we have dry and milder air starting to kick in. we will stay close to the 50s. it won't be all bad as far as the extended period is concerned. for the day planner tomorrow, plenty of sunshine. by midday, 47 degrees as we head to the high which will be into the low 50s. tonight, however, overnight low
